Description
Calcium deficiency in birds can present with a range of symptoms, which may impact various aspects of their health and behaviour. Recognising these signs early is important for prompt intervention and care.
Common Symptoms
· Dystocia or Egg Binding: Birds with insufficient calcium may experience difficulty laying eggs, a condition known as dystocia or egg binding.
· Soft or Thin Shelled Eggs: Deficient calcium levels often result in eggs with soft or abnormally thin shells, making them more prone to breakage.
· Flight Issues: Birds may have trouble flying or demonstrate uncoordinated movements while in flight due to weakened muscles and bones.
· Lack of Coordination During Flight: Affected birds might appear clumsy or have difficulty maintaining proper control and direction while flying.
· Legs Spread Further Apart: Calcium deficiency can cause birds to stand or walk with their legs abnormally spread, indicating muscle weakness.
· Leg Weakness: Birds may show general weakness in their legs, making perching, standing, or walking challenging.
· Seizures: In severe cases, a lack of calcium may lead to muscle tremors or seizures.
· Drooping Wings: Birds might exhibit drooping wings, which is often a sign of muscle fatigue or weakness connected to calcium deficiency.
· Biting or Aggression: Some birds display increased biting or aggressive behaviour, which could be related to discomfort or stress caused by the deficiency.
